Art 101: Session 3

Hello! As you can probably tell, this is another post about what I’ve been doing in my art class at CSN. I like making these posts, and I hope you guys like reading them as well.

This session was a fun one to do, but it was the first one that really challenged me. For this session, we had to do 2 more blind contours, 4 hand sketches of the hand holding something, and then also the same 4 drawings but finished. I had a lot of trouble drawing the hand in different ways, and to me, it always seemed like it would come out just a little bit off. I couldn’t ever really figure out what was off, so that was frustrating.

We were also supposed to use all of the pencils that we got in our art kit at the beginning of the semester, but I definitely did not use all of the pencils. I didn’t light my hand very well, so it was hard to tell which side was light and which side was dark. This then made it hard to figure out where the line variation should be, but I know that I need to practice all of this, and also make my lighting better whenever I have to draw something like this again.

Here are the two blind contour drawings I did. These were supposed to be of your hand in different positions. The blind contour drawings aren’t supposed to improve your skill, they are mainly just meant to get your mind ready to draw and serves as a good warm-up exercise before drawing.

This is my hand doing the “rock on” symbol. I was surprised that you could actually kind of tell which symbol I was doing.
This is my hand doing the “OK” symbol. It’s a little harder to tell with this one, especially because my pointer finger looks almost as long as the other fingers.

These are the sketches that I did for the hands holding things. I originally chose a few different things, but after drawing the chopstick one (which was by far the hardest one) I decided that the other things I wanted to do had similar hand postitions to that one. Therefore, I decided to choose other things that may be a little bit easier to draw than that.

Top left: holding a ribbon for a present, top right: holding a can of juice, bottom left: holding a screwdriver, bottom right: holding chopsticks.

Here are all of the drawings fully fleshed out. This didn’t take me that long, except for the chopstick drawing. I was really frustrated with that one and it was really hard to translate the posititon of the fingers onto the paper. No matter what I did, it didn’t seem to be right. Again, I know that I will get better with practice. I also know that this was pretty much my first time drawing hands holding things, and one of my first times drawing hands at all, so I cannot be that hard on myself.

This is my favorite drawing. Even though I found out that it is really hard for me to draw straight lines, I still really like how it turned out.
I was really surprised that no one guessed what I was holding in this picture, but I suppose that is because I am the one who drew it and stared at it for half an hour, and they didn’t.
This one was the easiest to do, mainly because the can is in front of most of my hand. Looking back at it now, I think it’s pretty good.
Here is the finished chopstick drawing. I know that it looks pretty similar to what my hand looks like while holding chopsticks, but I still feel like there is something off about it.

At the time of writing this, I am currently on sessions 9 and 10, and it is about perspective. I really do not like doing them and I am also finding those really difficult. I have to do a drawing tonight that I am not looking forward to, but I know that I will feel better when I am done. Also, I know that all of these sessions will help me be a better artist in the future. I am grateful that I am taking this class, even though it is very frustrating sometimes.

I really did not expect one of my hardest classes to be Art, but it is. I think it is my second hardest class out of four, just behind Accounting. My other two classes, Political Science and Philosophy, are much easier than these two. They aren’t easy, but they are much easier.

That is it for this post, and I just want to thank all of you guys for reading this post and supporting my journey. I am also so excited to make another post about my van soon, and I hope I can get that to you guys ASAP. I’ll see you guys in the next post!

Here are some of my other posts I’ve made recently in case you missed them!

P.S. If you guys cared about listening to me ramble about what I have in the works, this is the section for you! I plan on filming almost everything we do to the ambulance, maybe streaming it, and writing blog posts about it. There will be a lot of content in the future about the ambulance, so be sure to check back in to see more. Also, if you wanted to be notified any time I went live on my Twitch channel, here is the link for that:

I don’t have that many followers on there yet, but I hope to gain a lot when I start streaming frequently again.
