Art 101: Session 27

Hello! We are so, so close to the end of these Art 101 posts! I’m excited to be done with them, but also I want them to keep going at the same time. These last few weeks of the class were all about human anatomy, and this session in particular was about drawing skulls.

We were told to use an online 3D reference of a skull, and that worked pretty well. That also means I do not have a reference picture. I liked doing this session, mainly because I wasn’t that bad at it haha. We could also use a reference that we owned, but I do not own any anatomically correct skulls.

This is the first skull view that I drew, and I still think that it looks relatively good.

We had to draw the skulls in 3 different views, a front view, a side view, and a 3/4ths view (which was the hardest for me). I do think I did a pretty good job on these but I also know that I need to practice a lot if I want to draw realistic people or faces in the future.

The front view I did was definitely the best out of all the views I drew, and the 3/4ths view was the worst.

This is the side view, and you can clearly tell that I had to readjust my proportions multiple times, but I think I got it in the end.

These sessions were done in charcoal, and while I would have rather do them in pencil, it was a good medium for this. I only dislike that you can see my mistakes so clearly even after you erase them.

The 3/4ths view was most frustrating, mainly because it was a weird angle and I am not used to drawing things like that. I got it done though, but do think it needs a lot of improvement.

I think this looks a lot more like a chimp skull than the skull I was actually trying to draw.

That’s all I really have to say about this session. It was pretty quick, and I was glad to get it over with. I think I did relatively well, but I know I need practice. I’m looking forward to the time when I redo all of the sessions so I can see my progress.

Thank you all so much for reading my blog post and supporting my journey! I really appreciate it and it really helps me out. I am trying to finally be more consistent this time, so hopefully there will be another post out soon! I’ll see you guys then.

P.S. Here are the promised pictures of Jack! I put these at the end of every Art 101 post because I think he deserves to be admired by more people than me and my parents.

Here he is being so cute sitting under a side table. It almost looks like it was made for him by how well he fits.
Here he is playing with one of his toys. He is so funny when he plays and I love him so much.

  1. Kind of a gruesome subject, but I think you did great. But what about Tom? Isn’t he anatomically correct? Maybe not…haha. Love your drawings!
I see what you mean about the 3/4 view.. that’s hard to do.
Jack is adorable, as usual. He looks like he has a half & half black and white head… am I just seeing it wrong?

    1. Hahaha I think he is, but he also lives in my ambulance which is not at my house. The 3/4s was definitely the hardest because the proportions were weird.
Hahaha yeah that’s what it looks like on the back of his neck, he’s very cute. Thank you for commenting!
