Art 101: Session 28

Hello! This is the second to last Art 101 session post, which makes it pretty exciting. I really, really don’t like the rest of this post, but I know it was my first time drawing faces and I know I need to practice to get better.

This session was all about drawing faces and different parts of faces. We had to draw the parts of the face separately first, and then use ourselves and another person as models for different points of view. I don’t think I did terribly, but I definitely do not like looking at the outcome.

Looking back on these, I can tell they aren’t as good as I thought, but I still think they are pretty good.

For this session, we first had to do some practice of different facial features including eyes, the nose, and the mouth. These all turned out surprisingly well so I had relatively high hopes for the rest of the session. I do know that I need more practice, but I think they turned out really well for what they were.

We also had to do some practice of general head shapes from different angles. In retrospect, I should have done more practice for both of these things, but I have never really been a fan of practicing even though I know it’s necessary.

Next we had to draw our own face from the front angle and from the 3/4ths angle. I really hate drawing faces like this because I viscerally hate the outcome every time. I guess that just really means I should do it more to get better.

Here is the reference for the front angle. I knew it would be harder to do all of the details if I smiled, so I kept my expression neutral.

We also had to add tone to these face drawings which, in my opinion, made it look 10x worse haha. I saw some other people’s drawings as well and I know mine doesn’t look as bad as it could but I can’t help feeling like it’s really bad when I look at it.

Looking at it now though, months later, I don’t think it’s that terrible. It looks like a face, it’s obviously not super realistic but it does have all of the features and they don’t look that bad. I’m honestly not sure if I could do better now, but it would be practice anyways.

Here is the 3/4ths view. This one kinda looks like something out of a nightmare with the weird eyes and everything haha.

Next, we had to draw a face from a side profile, and I made my mom pose for me since we couldn’t use ourselves. I feel even worse about this one because it was someone else that I was making look terrible and not myself.

Side profile of my mom!

Looking back on this one, I still hate it. I see things I could work on, such as just practicing features from a side profile and just general head shape. This one looks, to me, like someone tried to make a profile look really bad for like a horror themed video game or something like that.

The terrible terrible drawing in question.

That’s all for this session! There will be one more Art 101 post, but I think I’m going to take at least a few months where I only post about music and music related things, just to try and be more consistent with both timing of posts and the content of the posts themselves.

Thank you all so much for reading my blog post! I appreciate every single one of you and I’m glad I can continue to entertain for a little bit longer. I’ll see you guys in the next one!

Hello hello

P.S. Here are the promised pictures of our cat, Jack, that I put at the end of every Art 101 post. I love him so much and I think he deserves to be shared with the world, if only in pictures. Enjoy!

Here he is sitting on the couch. So cute. He will only sit on the couch with us if he is as far away from us as possible.
Here he is sitting on the windowsill with his little feets up. He only does this sometimes and I go wild for it I love it so much.
Here he is acting like a decoration on a side table we have. I think this is exceptionally cute.

  1. While the faces don’t look like the real person’s face, I think they are good faces. The first one is great. The other looks like a certain style I’ve seen from Europe, maybe more Italian. Remember, too, that there are a lot of famous artists that draw faces in different, unrealistic ways but they’re still appealing.

    1. Thank you! Yeah I don’t think they’re very realistic, but they aren’t terrible. I do think there is a difference between me and them because that’s their style and I am currently trying to improve, so the expectation is a little bit different. That’s an interesting take though, I didn’t think about that. Thank you for commenting!
