Ambulance – Temporary Seating

Hello! Welcome back to another blog post! This is the first new content that I have posted on here in a long time. Make sure to subscribe if you enjoy it!

Alex and I recently took a trip to San Diego for spring break to visit two of my friends. Neither of them had a car, so we were going to be driving everyone around.

I was fine with this, but we did realize that we only had two legal seats available in the ambulance, so something had to be done about that. We had only the two seats in the front since we had removed all of the seating in the back when we tore everything out.

We didn’t want to take public transport, because it takes a long time and there wasn’t much around her house, and we didn’t want to take Ubers, because they get really expensive really quickly, and we didn’t just want to not go anywhere either.

Alex and I ended up planning a temporary bench seat for the back. We got some screws, a sheet of plywood cut up, and some seat belts from Amazon that were street legal. I was mainly worried about the seat belts, but they worked just fine.

Initially, we were only going to add a seat bottom, but we had the perfect size piece of plywood to make a slanted back on the chair to make it a bit more comfortable.

We worked on it the night before we were leaving for the trip, by lantern light, in the dark, at about 8pm, and it really felt like we were doing something we shouldn’t have been. It felt really funny at the time.

Unfortunately, we did not finish before we had to leave, so we had to finish in front of my friend’s house, but it all ended up working out in the end.

As a finishing touch, we added a bunch of towels to cushion the seats and cover the back, and it all looked pretty nice when we were done with it. We weren’t making any trips while there that were over 30 minutes, which was good.

It definitely wasn’t the most comfortable seat, but it got us where we needed to go with no issues. The bench was also right over the wheel well, and there isn’t a ton of suspension in the back, plus a lot less weight than usual, so it was quite a bumpy ride. San Diego doesn’t have the best roads either, which didn’t help haha.

All in all, it really felt like something college students should be doing over spring break. It was a lot of fun jerry-rigging this chair up with Alex, and I am happy we got to make some fun memories with it.
