Music Tuesday! – The All-American Rejects

Hello! This is the second Music Tuesday post, and as you can probably tell, this one is about the band The All-American Rejects! I have loved this band for a while, but like the last band I reviewed, Sum 41, I only knew a few of the songs that they had, so I was interested to see if I liked any of their other songs that I had never heard before. If you have any suggestions for more bands for me to listen to in the future, please leave me a comment so I can add them to the list!

The All-American Rejects are from Oklahoma and were formed in 1999. As far as I can tell, they have never broken up in 22 years, which I think is very impressive. They have at least never officially broken up, which is a lot more than a bunch of other bands can say.

After listening to both this band and Sum 41, I have realized that there are many bands that their most popular albums are their oldest. I think this is pretty interesting, given that if you did not know this, you would probably assume their music only got better and better.

This is a band that when you mention them, a few certain songs come to mind. These certain songs are what I expected the rest of their music to sound like, but I was incorrect. I listened to every album in order, and then put their music on shuffle for a few days. I also listened to a few of their singles and EPs before making this post.

Some of their singles and EPs have the classic, recognizable All-American Rejects sound, but these were few and far between. I think that the evolution of the sound of their music is good for the band, and shows that they are doing what they want to do, and not exactly what their fans what them to do.

For this post, there were only 6 main albums for me to listen to, and I did not particularly like most of them, so I will be talking about my favorite album, and not top three albums. They do have a lot of songs, so I will be talking about my top three favorite songs of theirs.

Listening to this band was an alright time. A lot of their music that isn’t their classic sound, isn’t really my type of music. I think that this will be a pattern for later bands that I review that I only know the popular songs of. I think that a lot of bands have a couple really great songs that take off, and the rest of the songs don’t really feel anything like those.

Top Album

     The All-American Rejects (2002)

This album was their first album, and also their most popular album, according to Spotify. I really love this album because this kind of music is what people think of when they think of The All-American Rejects. I really like all of the songs on this album and I definitely would listen to them again in the future. One of the main reasons I am not reviewing any more of their albums is because I did not feel the same about the others.

The feeling of this album really feels like it was made in the early 2000s, so I suppose that is good. I really like music from this period of time, so this seems like the perfect album for me to pick as my favorite.     One of the songs in this album, Swing, Swing, was one of the few songs I knew from this band before this past week. I really like that song, and I was a little surprised that it was in this album. All of the other albums that they have either have one or two good songs, in my opinion, and not really any more than that.

Top 3 Songs

     Gives You Hell

I think that this was the first song I ever listened to from this band, since it so popular. I remember this being on the radio and loving it. I know that pretty much everyone my age and a few years older all know this song, including my parents. This was a really popular song at the time, so I am not surprised that it is both their most popular song and my favorite song of theirs. Since I have so much history with this song, it definitely does have a special place in my heart. This song is about breaking up with someone and then living your best life while the other person isn’t. I really like this song because I like thinking about living my best life, and I think that it has motivated a lot of people to live in the way that they actually want to, instead of the way that they think they should.

    Gen Why? (DGAF)

The first time I heard this song was on the way to a festival where I knew The All-American Rejects were playing. Before I go to music festivals, I like to listen to as much of the music as I possibly can so I can more effectively sing along to the words when I see the bands. This is my mother’s favorite song from them, and I have listened to it so many times that I love it as well. It is basically a screw-you song, in my opinion, and I love that attitude. I get this amazing feeling when I listen to this song that makes me feel like I can do whatever I want and that I should just have fun in my life. This song has played in my car so many times that I know all of the words, and besides, it reminds me of my mother when I listen to it, so how could I not love it?

    Someday’s Gone

My first time hearing this song was actually this past week. It was one of the last songs that I listened to, and it really stuck out to me. This is in their album titled Rejects Faves, which were mostly not my faves, haha. The thing that stuck out the most for me a bout this song is the first line. The first line says, “What makes you so damn sure that you’re perfect, huh?” I think this line stuck out to me the most because I know a lot of people who think they are perfect when they are really not. It also makes me think about all of the things that I know I have to improve on, and I think I like thinking about those things because it means that I am gradually improving. Another strong theme in this song is letting things go, especially people. I do not like letting things go, but I have exponentially improved in that area in the last year. I think that it is very important to make sure that some things are let go so you can finally move on with your life. My life has improved greatly because of this skill, and I like that the song promotes that.

All in all, I really like this band and what they speak about in their music, but a lot of their music is not something that I would like to listen to on a daily basis. I am glad that I listened to all of these songs so I know what they are all like and that I know what their new songs sound like as well. If you have any suggestions of more music that I can listen to in the future, please leave a comment so I can put them on my list!

Thank you all so much for reading my blog post and supporting my journey! I will be posting another Music Tuesday next Tuesday, and I am really excited for that one!

  1. Gives You Hell is my favorite. Good post! I agree that most artists have a few good songs and the rest sound nothing like the good ones. Oh, well. They can’t all be zingers.

    1. Thank you so much! Yeah, I feel the same way about a lot of bands, but there are some that have all good songs, or closer to half bad and half good in my opinion. I’m excited to listen to more music and acquire more opinions in the very near future! Thank you for commenting!
