All About the First Shirts I Made!

Hello! This is a really exciting post to me, because it is about me making something new! I recently made two tank tops, and I would like to tell you guys about the whole process. I want to start making more posts like these, doing new things, in the very near future. If you have any comments or suggestions, please leave them in the comments below!

This is yet another post that you guys helped me choose! Thank you for participating in this poll, and if you would like to participate in the poll for choosing the post for next Wednesday, here is the link: Poll! I would really appreciate it if you wanted to vote in the poll because it does help me out.

Recently, I realized that a lot of the clothes I want to own are pretty simple, and then I realized that I could actually make my own clothes. I have a sewing machine now and I have a little bit of practice with using it, so I decided why not. This turned out to be a lot more difficult than I had originally anticipated, but the outcome was definitely worth it.

I’m excited to do more things like this in the future, since I know I can get a lot better at it and make a lot of different kinds of cool things for myself and maybe eventually other people. If you have any suggestions on sewing, please leave them in the comments below because I can use all the help I can get.

As I was deciding to make some of my clothes, I found out that I was going on my trip to Mexico soon. I also realized that I did not have a whole lot of cool clothes that I could bring, so I decided to make two shirts to bring with me. One of my favorite shirts that I own is a cropped tank top that is in a halter style, so I decided to go with that kind of style for these shirts.

If you would like to read more about my Mexico trip, I made a blog post about it at this link: I would really appreciate if you wanted to check it out! I’m hoping to make more travel posts in the very near future! I loved making this Mexico post, and there are a lot of pictures included as well!

Making a template for the tank tops was a little bit more difficult, but only because the back of the shirt was impossible to trace so I had to freehand it. I love this style of shirt, and I do not regret making a challenging style first. I hope to make a lot more of these in the future.

Here I am in the blue tank top that I made! I really love how it turned out and I want to make a whole lot more!

In the beginning, I did not know what colors to make these shirts, but then I had a great idea to make both of the shirts two-toned. One of the shirts was going to be two-toned yellow, and the other was going to be two-toned blue. I only ended up making the blue shirt two-toned, because I could not find a yellow that I liked that went with the yellow I already had.

I got all of the fabric I used from a local thrift store, since it is a lot cheaper than buying fabric from anywhere else, and I know that this helps out the thrift store that I love going to all the time. I think that this is a really great idea, plus it does not put any new material into the world that I really do not need.

Here you can see a little bit of the back of the shirt, and you can see that the back is lower than the front, and that I clearly made it myself.

I think that buying all of my fabric from thrift stores is a really good idea, because it helps out the economy around me, it is sustainable, and I would much rather reuse clothes than have to buy all new fabric. However, I do think there are going to be some instances in the future where the best option is to buy new fabric.

In the beginning, I thought that there was no way that this project could be more difficult that cutting out pieces of fabric and then stitching them together, but I was very wrong. I found out that this was pretty easy, but it was difficult for me to cut the fabric out without making the edges ragged, and I found out that sewing along the hems was very difficult for me. However, I have found out a couple ways to solve these problems in the future and I am looking forward to trying them out.

I traced out the pieces of fabric, cut them out, pinned them together, made sure they fit, stitched along the seams, and then stitched along the hems, which was the most difficult part. For the second shirt, I decided to not sew the hems on the shirt yet, because I wanted to see how the shirt would hold up without stitching along the hems.

Turns out, the shirt held up, but not great. All of the edges curled up a lot more than they would have if I had sewed the hems, especially after I washed it. I know now that I should probably hand wash both of these shirts from now on, if I want to keep them nice for a long time, but I am not sure if I have the energy and motivation to do that all the time.

Sewing the hems was the most difficult part for me because the small sliver of fabric kept getting caught under the foot of my sewing machine, but I think an easy way to fix this is to just cut bigger pieces of fabric and to also make sure that the sewing needle is by the side of the foot and not in the middle, like I had it.

As you can see in this picture, the hems of the yellow shirt were already curling and not looking great, and this is the first time I wore it. I do plan on sewing the hems eventually.

I’m really proud of how the shirts came out, espcially since it was my first time making clothes. I would really like to make more of these in the future, and I have a lot of ideas for different styles and kinds of shirts to make. I might also start making pants in the future, since I have a lot of cool ideas for kinds of pants that I want to wear.

I think that sometime in the future, I will start making these shirts to sell. I would love to make cute tank tops by hand and see other people wearing them and loving them just as much or more than I do. I would also love to start making custom shirts similar to the shirts I have in mind to make with custom colors and details and styles. Making things and selling them to people is one of my favorite things because I love seeing my art in it’s natural habitat.

Here is me in the blue tank top I made in a leather shop in Mexico. I think it turned out a little short, but now I have a better guideline to make better shirts in the future.

If you have any suggestions on how to improve my sewing or clothes making skills, please leave a comment or send me a message, because I would love to hear from you! I am super excited to finish a bunch of the projects that I have going now and then start working on some new shirts both for myself and to sell.

Thank you all so much for reading my blog post and supporting my journey! If you would like to participate in the next poll for next Wednesday’s post, here is the link: Poll! I would really love it if you would like to participate, because it helps my figure out what you guys want to see more of!

P.S. If you would like a custom ashtray, the general pricing for just color and glitter in my medium to small molds would be $12 locally in Vegas, and $4.25 extra if I am shipping it to you. This would be $3 extra if I am using a larger mold, since it takes more resin to make. The general pricing for color, glitter, and flowers or a picture or whatever else you want me to put in it would be $15 locally in Vegas, and $4.25 if I am shipping it to you. If you would like me to add a magnet in the bottom or the sides, that would be $5 extra. If you wanted something that had more stuff than this, the pricing varies.

  1. That’s great that you’re teaching yourself to make clothes! Without a commercial pattern, it’ll be a lot of trial and error, but it looks like you’re learning quite well. I didn’t realize thrift shops had fabric. I’m glad you found that out.

    1. Thank you so much! Yeah I think it is a really great skill to have, but the pattern thing is difficult. Thrift shops don’t have fabric per se, but they have extra large shirts for very cheap that I cut up and use for fabric! Thank you for commenting!
