Art 101: Session 3 Extended Studies

Hello! Here is yet another post about my college art class that I’m currently taking. This is about the “extended studies” section of session 3. Extended studies basically means that there are other optional things to do to further practice your skills in this area.

Session 3 was about drawing hands holding different things, so the extended studies thing is a little different. The goal for these studies was to pick 3 different emotions and try to portray those emotions in a drawing of a hand holding something. I’m not sure if my explanation made sense, but I bet it will make more sense when you see the actual drawings.

Before I show you guys the drawings, I also had to do 3 blind contours of the same hands holding things that I was going to draw. I found it a lot more difficult to draw these because the object completely threw me off. I haven’t ever really drawn hands, let alone hands holding things, so this was a really new experience.

Here are the blind contours:

This is my hand holding a ring. The emotion that this was supposed to portray was someone coveting something.
I think this one is a bit more clear on what it is, but this is my hand holding a spoon with two fingers. The emotion that this was supposed to convey was disgust.
This is probably the most difficult to decipher but this is my hand holding a stress ball. The emotion that this was supposed to convey was anger.

The blind contours are a lot easier than doing the actual drawings, and the blind contours this time were more difficult than usual so I was nervous about doing the actual drawings. The drawings were pretty hard, but I enjoyed doing most of them. The most difficult one was the spoon drawing, mostly because it was really difficult to get the positions of the fingers right and the spoon right.

During this session, I discovered that it is pretty difficult for me to draw artificial objects compared to organic objects like hands. I really enjoy finding things out about myself during these sessions, and I do think I have found out a lot.

This is my hand holding the stress ball trying to depict anger. This is my favorite because it looks the most realistic of all my drawings.
This is my hand holding the ring from earlier depicting coveting. I don’t really like this one because it didn’t really accurately depict the hand pose or the emotion.
This is my hand holding the spoon with two fingers depicting disgust. This is my least favorite because my fingers just look so off.

I do really think that I need to practice all of these skills. I can see a lot of the flaws in my drawings, and I’m pretty confident that I can fix them over time and practice. However, it has really always been pretty hard for me to practice things on my own. This class has helped me practice, but only because it basically forced me to.

I want to start practicing things, but I’m not sure where to get that motivation yet. I know I can work on it and it will come to me in the future, but it is frustrating that I have never had any motivation to practice anything.

Additionally, I’m not sure if any of you guys remember, but I used to do polls a lot on my blog. So, I wanted to bring those back. I made a poll asking you guys if you actually like these posts, and it’s completely anonymous so you can answer truthfully! I would really appreciate if you did answer the poll because it will show me more of what my audience wants to see from me.

Here is the poll:

Poll!

Thank you all so much for reading my blog post and supporting me in this journey. I hope to continue posting for a long time, and I hope that I can continue to entertain all of you for that time. I’ll see you in the next one!

P.S. If you guys cared about listening to me ramble about what I have in the works, this is the section for you! I plan on filming almost everything we do to the ambulance, maybe streaming it, and writing blog posts about it. There will be a lot of content in the future about the ambulance, so be sure to check back in to see more. Also, if you wanted to be notified any time I went live on my Twitch channel, here is the link for that:

My Twitch!

I don’t have that many followers on there yet, but I hope to gain a lot when I start streaming frequently again.
