Art 101: Session 5

Hello! Another Art 101 post is here, and this one was super hard. It made it even more difficult that I had to do it in a hotel room in LA. It would have been a lot easier if I was at my house with my own supplies and fabrics. I thought this shirt would work well, but it actually did not work well at all. I had no other options, so I had to do my best.

In this session, the main focus was on drawing complex organic objects (the show) on top of folded fabric. I was pretty nervous for the fabric part, because I know that a lot of people say that fabric is super hard to draw. I did end up having a bunch of problems with this session, but I think I have gotten better since.

Also, a lot of my problems actually came just from not being at my house with the right materials, but I did have a few problems with the drawing itself.

So, for this session we had to have a reference picture, a blind contour line drawing, and a cross contour line drawing. First up, we have the reference picture.

Reference from the hotel room in LA.

I’m not sure if you can tell in this picture, but the table I was using was pretty small, which did not help. I also did not really understand at first how to position the fabric so it would be easier to draw, so that part doesn’t look great. I figured that out in the next session.

It was also a bit difficult because the shirt kept sliding off the table, and I wasn’t sure how to keep it on the table without things holding it down showing up in the reference picture. However, after this was all over, I got a good score so I was happy anyways. The blind contour is next.

Blind contour, which turned out much better than I expected.

I think I did the blind contour line drawing after I did the contour line drawing, which I was not supposed to do. I had completely forgotten that I was supposed to do one until I was trying to turn it in haha. This actually turned out a whole lot better than I thought it would, and I am really proud of it. I know it does not look exactly like the reference, but I was not looking at the paper while I was drawing it.

Finished drawing!

This was the finished cross contour line drawing that I did, and I am actually really proud of it. I do not really like how the fabric turned out at all because you can’t really tell what it is, but that’s okay. I really like how the shoe came out, and I have actually gotten pretty good at drawing that specific shoe. I think I’ve drawn it about three times now haha.

I really hate the fabric, but I think I could have positioned it to make it easier on myself, but I also know that I have to practice that. In the next session, you can tell I have made the fabric folded differently so it was easier to draw. It is mostly bunched up against the back of the shoe and not under it, which was much easier.

Overall, I think I learned a lot from this session and it most definitely told me that I am not perfect, that I really do have to practice if I want to be better. I hope you guys enjoyed looking at these, because I mostly enjoyed creating them! (Not the fabric part haha)

Thank you all so much for reading my blog post and supporting my journey! I appreciate every one of you, and I am excited to make more posts in the future. This Sunday, I will be posting something very exciting, so make sure to check back for that! Thank you!

P.S. If you guys cared about listening to me ramble about what I have in the works, this is the section for you! I plan on filming almost everything we do to the ambulance, maybe streaming it, and writing blog posts about it. There will be a lot of content in the future about the ambulance, so be sure to check back in to see more. Also, if you wanted to be notified any time I went live on my Twitch channel, here is the link for that:

My Twitch!

I don’t have that many followers on there yet, but I hope to gain a lot when I start streaming frequently again. I have actually streamed a few times so far since I got my new GoPro, and it’s been going a lot better than I expected.
