Art 101: Session 6

Hello! I think you all know the drill by now, but if you do not, I post once a week about the assignments that I am doing in my college art class. I hope you enjoy!

This session was about bringing together most of what we had learned so far. Still life, fabric, and line variation. We were supposed to find a few fruit items and put them on a piece of fabric with a few folds in it, and then photo document the process of doing it.

Here is the photo reference for the still life. I really have a lot of trouble putting together interesting compositions, but I think this one looks pretty good.

It took me more time than I would like to admit to put this all together. As I think I’ve mentioned before, I’ve had a lot of trouble putting things together in a nice way, and this was one of those instances. I moved the banana around a lot trying to get it to look nice, but settled on this placement. I still think it doesn’t look terrible, but I definitely do not think I have a good eye for placements of items like this.

Next, I started my sketch of the still life. I’ve found sketching to be pretty easy throughout this course, so I was happy that this step did not take that long. I think the sketch really does look pretty proportionally accurate.

Here is the first sketch I did. This was in a pretty big sketchpad, so it took up a lot of room. I know it might be a little hard to see, but the next ones will be more clear.

I was pretty nervous going into this session, mainly because I did not know if I would be any better at drawing the fabric than before. The fabric was a necessary part in the instructions, so I knew I had to do it.

The first drawing part of the drawing was just a simple line drawing with no line variation. It took so long to draw all of the lines in the fabric, but I almost enjoyed doing it. I tried listening to a story in video format during this drawing, but I could not focus on it at all. I decided to just work in silence.

All of these lines took forever!

The next step that we had to document was line variation. I did actually really enjoy this step because it made the whole drawing come together. This also took a really long time because I went over almost all of the original lines with darker lines or lighter lines, and this took a lot of thought. I was glad I was not simultaneously trying to listen to a video while doing this part either.

At this point, I did not take a step back and look at the fabric with fresh eyes, but now, I can really see that the way the lines are helped the whole fabric idea to come through. I really like that I can kind of make the fabric obvious to anyone looking at it because this is the part that I was the most nervous about it.

Step 2 of the drawing part. I really liked doing this part because this is when it all started to really come together.

The last step of this drawing session took the least amount of time. I knew that we had to add more detail in the last step, so I purposely made sure to leave some details in the last step for this step. I did not want to work really hard working on making sure that the two look different when I could just not add some details.

I am honestly really proud of this drawing, but I also know that I could do better if I tried this now. I really want to go through all of these sessions again after the class is over and compare all of them to see how much I have progressed.

Last step of the drawing! I know it’s a little hard to see, but there is more detail in the line variation in this step compared to the last step.

I really like this session and how it turned out. Let me know what you think about it in the comments! I’m open to any criticisms and advice that you may have. Thank you!

If you guys would like to read my last post about the vambulance progress, here is the link for that: Ambulance: Week 4 I’m really excited that I finally get to keep writing about my van, and I am so excited for the day I finally get to travel in it!

Again, thank you so much for reading my blog post and supporting my journey. I know this post has come out a little late, but I’ve been behind on a lot of things. I hope you all enjoyed it! I’ll see you in the next one!

Thank you!

P.S. If you would like to read a recent post I made about a local Las Vegas band, please go to this link: Psycho! I really enjoyed writing it and I would like to make sure that everyone who wants to read it does read it. Thank you!

    1. Hahaha, thank you! Yeah, there are a lot more steps than I first imagined. I never really understood the utility of all of the different steps, but I definitely do now. I’m excited to do some things outside of class as well. Thank you for commenting!
