Psycho Canvas!

Hello! I haven’t made a post about painting in over a year I believe, so it’s about time. I recently painted this for a friend of mine, Ethan, who is in this band. I also wrote a blog post about the band, and here is a link if you wanted to read that as well: Psycho!

I found out a little over a year ago that I really enjoy painting logos and I turned out to be actually kind of good at it, so I thought this would be a good birthday present for him. I worked on this for about 5 hours total, but it was worth it. I love making things for people.

Anywho, now I’m going to tell you guys all about the process of sketching and painting it. I did end up using some new knowledge I’ve gained through my art class, which was interesting. First, I practiced sketching the logo on some sketch pad paper, just so I could get the hang of it before I put it on a canvas.

This is one of the designs I wanted to do. This one had smaller letter than the other one.

I found out that sketching things beforehand and designing them is really beneficial because then you can try out different designs and decide which one you like the best. And all before you put anything on a canvas and ruin it!

This is the first design I wanted to do, which had much bigger letters. I wasn’t really thinking about the letter size when I was doing this one, which is how I usually end up painting logos.

Then, I asked a bunch of people which design they thought looked better, and it actually came out in a tie. I ended up just sketching on the canvas with some medium letters, which I decided fit best on the canvas and kept the general look of what the logo was supposed to be.

First sketch on the canvas! I couldn’t find these canvases at first, which I was really frustrated by, but I ended up finding them.

At first, I sketched the eye in the background first without any consideration for how it would look with the letters, and that was a mistake. It was all the same height when I was done sketching and I really didn’t like that, so I redid the eye to make it bigger.

Finished sketch that I ended up going with.

After all that, I started painting the next day. I knew this would take a lot of layers of making sure everything has good coverage and going over everything a bunch of times to make it at neat as possible. This step took about 2 hours to get the first layer of everything down without doing any detail work, which I would do later in the day.

First layer! I was really happy with how this was turning out so far.

I finished it later this day, after my dad and I worked on the ambulance for about 4 hours. I spent another 2 hours on this, making sure everything was as neat as possible and looked the best it could. Later in the day, I was going to their show, so I wanted to give it to him then because his birthday was on the 8th and the show was on the 9th.

I didn’t want to rush it, but I also didn’t want to miss the show. While working with the ambulance, I was using my arms a lot so they were sore and therefore shaky, which did not help at all with the detail work. However, I got through it and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Here is the finished painting! I forgot to take a picture of it at my house, so we are on the way to the show in this picture.

I also made sure to seal it with gloss lacquer spray, so it was completely protected and also shiny. I always put several coats on my canvases, and this was no exception. Thankfully, it dried before the show. I wrapped it up in comics from the newspaper, wrote a little note, and it was ready.

Doing all of this also made me realize that I do miss painting and I want to get back into it, probably after I finish this semester of college. This also made me realize that the class that I am taking for art right now is actually really helping me get better at other kinds of art and just drawing in general, so I am grateful for that.

Here is my little baby looking very nice and shiny from the sealant.

Anywho, that is all I have for you today, but before I say goodbye, here is a little video I took at the show for your viewing pleasure. It was a super fun show and I’m really glad I went and got to experience it. I’m excited for all of their shows that I get to go to in the future.

I will be making an entire post about the videos and pictures I have from this show and rhe show I went to on my birthday, so stay tuned for that as well!

Ethan!

Thank you all so much for reading my blog post and supporting my journey. I appreciate every single one of you and I hope I can continue to entertain you all for a long time. Thank you for reading and I’ll see you all in the next post!
