Art 101: Session 14 and Extended Studies

Hello! This is another Art 101 post, but it is not coming out in the right order. If you didn’t know, I’ve been sick for a couple weeks so my posts were not coming out on time. This was supposed to come out 2 weeks ago, but I did not have the energy to write it or post it. So, it is coming out now.

There will be a few of these catch up posts, but we will be back to normal soon. Anyways, onto the post.

This was one of the first sessions where we actually got to work with value and shading. Everything else up until this point has been just line work, so this was interesting.

The main part of this session was to draw two objects, a sphere and an egg, with value and shading. We were supposed to put the object on a piece of dark cloth and light it strongly from one side.

Here are all of my pencils after this session. They are so much shorter than they were when I got them haha. It’s satisfying.

I’m writing this way after I drew these for this session, and I’m thinking about how much I have improved with this one class. It really makes me want to redo all of the sessions and see my progress in front of me.

Now, for the meat of the post. The next drawing is the one of the tennis ball. I really do not like how this one looks, and I wish I took more time to make it look better. I know I can do a lot better on the blending and just making everything look a bit more realistic.

Here is the reference for my sphere drawing. We have a ton of tennis balls, so that was the easiest thing for me to use.

My least favorite part of most of these sessions is setting up the still life for reference. It just takes more time than I think it should and I just really do not like it. I especially do not like working with fabric because it’s hard to get it in the exact spot that I want it in.

Here is my sphere drawing. I don’t like it and I know I can do better now.

I know it’s not the worst job I could’ve done, but I do know that I could’ve done better at the time. I can see all of the different tones clearly, and they are not blended at all. I do think I should’ve tried harder on that part. I’m not sure if I was doing this last minute, but I probably was.

Looking back at these drawings, I know that I have really improved in the blending and shading department. I’m excited to redo them in the future.

Here is the egg I used. I think this is the most interesting picture I have ever posted.

We used a lot of white eggs during this class, and I really didn’t expect to be doing that haha. This drawing was definitely better than the one of the tennis ball, but I could still have done better.

The shading outside of the egg is a lot better than the tennis ball. I had a hard time making sure the highlight on the egg wasn’t covered by accident. On this one, we also had to make a tone chart on the side of the paper. That was probably the easiest part of the session.

Here is my drawing of the egg. It is a lot better than the sphere, but I can still see that a lot of improvement should be made.
Here are all of my pencil shavings, I also thought this was satisfying. It makes me feel like I actually did something if I have things to show for it.
This was the extended studies for this session. This was my favorite part of the entire session as well.
Here is my new hair! You guys have probably already seen it in my other posts haha.

P.S. Here are the promised pictures of Jack. I put these at the end of every Art 101 post just because I love him so much and think he deserves to be shown off. He is so cute.

Here he is sitting in the window in my room.
Here is another one of him in my room. I thought he looked extra cute behind the curtain.
Here he is sitting on his favorite paper with both of my parents petting him. You can tell he clearly likes it haha.
