Art 101: Sessions 24, 25, and 26

Hello! I am a bit excited to make this post, mainly because I think this was my favorite outcome of any session that we did all year. These sessions were all combined for some reason, but I am not sure exactly why since they could have only been one session.

Anyways, what this session was about was a combination of the previous three sessions. Those were using charcoal to draw fabric, glass, and metal (which I did not do). So this session had us setting up a themed composition that included 5 to 7 items, including one glass object and one metal object, on top of some fabric with some folds.

Here is my reference picture for the drawing.

I chose baking as my theme, so I added a container of oil, a glass jar, my metal bowl, a whisk, and a ladle shaped like a dinosaur, which was my favorite part. We had to light it strongly from one side, so I also did that.

We had to do a rough draft/practice page before we did the final drawing, so that is in the next picture. I did procrastinate on this session, so I had to finish all of this in about eight hours, when we were supposed to be taking breaks and doing it within a few days at least. I do think it turned out really well even though I did not have the right amount of time.

Here is my practice sheet. I do like how this looks, and I think I should do this with some other drawings in the future before I start on the actual drawing.

The rough draft was pretty easy and I completed that pretty quickly. Our teacher wanted us to test out every hardness of charcoal and also every different kind of eraser, because they do look different based off of how the eraser is made.

The next step in this session was to take a picture of our composition through our viewfinder, so the professor could see what our final drawing should look like. Mine actually only looks realtively similar to this, since I cut off some at the top by accident. My paper was not the same exact proportion as the viewfinder, so that also made that part difficult.

Here is my viewfinder picture. It doesn’t look much different than the original picture of the composition.

I worked for a long time on this drawing, at least 4 hours. I think that was the longest I had ever worked on a drawing up until this point. I was impressed that I had enough to do that it actually did take that long. I usually do everything pretty fast in this class, so it surprised me that this took so long.

I tried really hard to make this drawing look good, and I think it honestly turned out really well. Also, the drawing in person is bigger than you probably think, its about 18″ by 24″ and takes up a lot of space haha.

I really like how the whisk turned out, and I tried my best to make sure that the glass, the plastic, and the metal all turned out alright. I don’t think the fabric was my best work, but I did try really hard so I don’t fault myself on that. I really like the dinosaur ladle, just because it is so cute.

Here is the final drawing! I really like it, even now looking back on it.

I think my shading got a lot better in this session, and I really think I did a pretty good job of tones, shading, and sketching than I had done in previous sessions. I would like to do this one again as well, but I’m not sure how much I would progress, mostly because I think this one is so good.

I also took a picture of how my room looked after I finished, mostly because it got so cluttered throughout the hours I was working on this. There are paper scraps, charcoal scraps, papers, my laptop, my composition, art supplies, etc. It was a complete mess but it was worth it to make my final drawing.

Here is how my room looked after this session, it was a disaster.

Well, that is all I have for you guys today! There are only a couple of sessions left for me to talk about, so I hope I can keep it interesting! This was a fun session to do, and I hope I can improve even more in the future.

Thank you all so much for reading my blog post and supporting my journey! I really appreciate it and I hope that I can keep putting out interesting content for months and even years to come. I’ll see you guys in the next one!

P.S. Here are the pictures of Jack that I put at the end of every art post. I love him so much, and recently, he has gotten a lot more affectionate than he used to be. But these pictures are from a couple of months ago anyways.

Here he is checking out the inside of my dresser after my dad took one of the drawers out to fix it. He even slept in there for a little bit.
Here he is mauling some ribbon he found. Both me and my mom were in the room so we figured it was okay if he played with it for a bit.
Here he is sitting in the little fort I made him outside of my room. He really liked it, probably because it was a small enclosed space that he felt safe in.

    1. Hahaha, I really like how the rough draft looks as well. I do think I need to practice more, and maybe if all my practice was in a nice format like this it would be easier for me to motivate myself to do it. Hahaha, that is very true. Thank you for commenting!
